We were raised that dogs are part of the family. The past few years was struggling with the realization that our mature 13 year old Golden Retriever was facing old age. Two years prior swallowed a needle that resulted in surgery and a week’s stay at the vet hospital. The following months after had growing hip problems and a hard time getting up. He could barely make it up the steps coming in from the backyard.
November 2013 started on Canine Health supplement for dogs, within a week saw he was more alert and responsive. Within a week there was a spring in his step, he was being his old self wagging his tail at the front door wanting to go for a walk when I got home. With his increased energy reclaimed the leader of the pack status with our two other dogs.
Several months went by, it became evident there was another problem. He just didn’t have the energy to walk or stand, he didn’t even attempt to eat. When he tried to get up from a laying position, his hind legs were almost none responsive. Another week at the vet hospital, all the tests showed there was nothing wrong. Our Veterinarian explained the typical lifespans of dogs ranges from 10 to 13 years and our pet was near the end of his life. He explained if your dog is suffering in any way, then it’s time to say good-bye.
On October 14, 2014 had to face reality and put my friend to sleep. One of the hardest things I have ever done. In the last moments of his life holding his face up looking eye to eye remembering the bundle of energy tearing around the yard so many years ago. He was calm as we said goodbye.
